200 miles, zero charging, world record
Great Western Railway's Class 230 battery train set a world record in 2025, travelling 200.5 miles on a single charge, verified by the Railway Performance Society, before entering regular three-car service in 2026. Its real innovation lies not in the batteries alone but in how they are topped up: lineside batteries feed dedicated charging rails, and retractable shoes beneath the train allow a rapid recharge in minutes rather than hours. GWR's trials suggest the approach could offer a cheaper alternative to electrifying an entire route, useful wherever stringing new wire simply does not add up.
