World's highest railway runs on frozen ground

Keeping ground frozen is easy. Keeping it frozen while running trains across it at 100km/h is not. The Qinghai-Tibet Railway, the world's highest railway line, crosses vast stretches of permafrost that would ordinarily thaw and destabilise under the heat generated by passing trains and supporting infrastructure. Engineers instead designed the line to actively manage ground temperature, preserving the frozen state the track depends on rather than fighting a losing battle against it once built. The railway has since carried more than 100 million tonnes of freight across terrain few railways would attempt at all. It is a reminder that extreme engineering isn't always about speed or power; sometimes it's about persuading the ground itself to cooperate.
