Royal Navy mine-hunting, without any sailors

The most dangerous job in the Royal Navy may soon involve no sailors at all. Mines are typically cleared by placing people directly in harm's way; Britain is redesigning that task around autonomy instead. In January 2026, Thales UK secured an initial £10 million contract, with potential investment rising to £100 million, to build Remote Command Centres letting Royal Navy personnel control multiple autonomous boats and off-board systems at once. The programme builds on Ariadne, delivered in 2025 as Britain's first end-to-end autonomous mine-hunting vessel under a separate £184 million Thales contract. Its uncrewed hull and sophisticated sonar locate mines without anyone entering mined waters, work that now supports over 200 jobs across Somerset, Plymouth, Portsmouth and Scotland.
